May 2017 Newsletter Print

President's Message

Welcome to the May 2017 edition of KeyNotes...IREM 8's newsletter of all events.

It's hard to believe that we are quickly approaching the mid-year mark--where has the year gone? It seems like yesterday our Board of Directors met for our Annual Retreat to discuss and implement plans on how to achieve our goals and objectives for 2017! My Board of Directors and I are thrilled to report to the membership that under the stewardship of Jean Collins, our Executive Director, we have already met most of our mid-year goals with the hopes of achieving all of the the Chapter's goals by the end of the year! Behind the scenes, our 2017 Board continues to be progressing towards achieving the remaining goals. Which begs the question--have you achieved your mid-year goals, and if so, great job!  If not, no need to worry--there is still plenty of time to make the necessary adjustments. "Don't worry, be calm, we are real estate executives!"

Thank you to everyone who attended the rescheduled March lunch meeting at the Marriott at Metro Center. We had a higher than expected turnout and enjoyed the very informative presentation by the principals of the law firm Offit/Kurman, our newest industry partner, who spoke on a range of topics relevant to apartments, condominiums, office, and retail.

While it was sad to say goodbye to the International IREM Leadership and Legislative Summit, a Washington, DC-based IREM staple for many years, I was very pleased with the turnout and information content provided at our the newly-revamped Regional Leadership Meeting that was held in New York City on March 21-23. Our Regional Leadership Conference welcomed members of Regions 1, 2, and 3. David Forster, Jennifer Laforest, Jean Collins, and myself attended the action-packed two-day event on behalf of Chapter 8 that included a symposium along with numerous classes and activities. The sessions were geared towards expanding our leadership abilities, acknowledging and recognizing our volunteers, developing the chapter, and effectively managing the association.

Thank you to those who have completed and submitted an income/expense analysis report.  You will be receiving a free Income/Expense Analysis eBook and a free individual building report for your property.

Our Annual Candidates Meeting, held in conjunction with IREM Chapter 92 on April 18th, was another huge success with nearly 166 members, industry partners and guests in attendance.  We welcomed IREM's National Interim CEO Lynn Disbrow, who answered all our questions about the Capstone courses and the MPSA format. Candidates from 8 & 92 were given the opportunity to network together during the event.  Lynn also reiterated the features of using the IREM website and why it should be our online tool of choice and explained the many benefits of this often-untapped resource that is available free to you through your IREM membership. Part 2 of this meeting was the Industry Resource Exchange event which included our Industry Partners and was hosted by Rob Collins, CPM.  This was a happy hour/networking event with Industry Partners and Property Managers discussing industry-related topics.  Thank you to everyone who came out to Maggiano's of Chevy Chase for this great event!

Congratulations are in order for the newest members of the IREM Family for Chapters 8 & 92 who were installed at our April Meeting:

  • Chapter 92 - Shireen Ambush, CPM with Abaris Realty, Inc.
  • Chapter 92 - Kwame Yiadom, CPM with Abaris Realty, Inc.
  • Chapter 8 - Sheila Jones, CPM with Gates Hudson

Welcome New Members

PM EXPO 2017 - IREM Chapters 8, 77 & 92 once again had a booth at the PM EXPO on Thursday, April 20th.  Special thanks to Jennifer Laforest, CPM and Rita Parasidis who served as our Chapter Ambassadors at this event.  At the event, we received several inquiries related to reinstating lapsed membership and requests for residential property information.

Here are some of the projects we are working on:

Calling all CPM Members, ARM Members, Student Members, Candidates and Industry Partners - our Chapter needs your input!  Jennifer Laforest, CPM, our VP of Communications, is working on a short video presentation on topics of interest to the real estate management industry.  You are the experts in the field of real estate management.  Please let us know if you are interested in participating in these mini video presentations.  Our goal will be to present these short videos at our meetings to engage our current memberships and potential new members.

Student Outreach - With the gracious help of Rob Collins, CPM, Past President of IREM Chapter 92 and Current Chairperson of the National Student Outreach Advisory Board, and Kris Henry, CPM, our VP for Student Outreach, we have been in dialogue with The University of the District of Columbia - Community Workforce Division.  Our goal for the University is to be able to offer the Workforce development program a membership with IREM, provide classes that are required to obtain the ARM designation, engage in activities to gain experience that would lead to other IREM designations, offer opportunities to interact with IREM-affiliated professionals and expose participants to the possibilities and jobs that are available in the field of property management.  I will continue to keep you updated on these exciting developments!

REstart Program - We were introduced to the REstart Program at our Annual Fall Conference in San Diego last October.  The IREM San Diego Chapter No. 18 has effectively sponsored the REstart program as a way to give back to the community by preparing disadvantaged adults to gain employment in property management.  IREM Northern Virginia Chapter No. 77 has expressed interest in launching REstart in our area and are seeking volunteers.  Please contact me if you are interested in serving on the focus group.  Additional questions on the REstart program may also be sent to

Swag Bags - A special THANK YOU to all our vendor companies for providing support to IREM, we have had very positive reviews and feedback on the SWAG bags that are now available at our general membership meetings.  Please consider all our Industry Partners when bidding your next job.  Without their ongoing support, many of our IREM programs and events would not be possible.  This month, I would like to especially thank ABM for sponsoring IREM Region 3 Educational Courses.

There are always ways for IREM Chapter 8 members to help!  Look at what we have planned for the upcoming months.  Please plan on attending one of these events as they provide you - our members - with many opportunities to pay it forward by learning, mentoring, connecting or by giving back to the community.

I hope to see all of you at our June event--A Night at Nationals Park! Join us on Monday, June 12th to see the Nationals take on the Atlanta Braves. There are still a few tickets available. Registration information is below.

Chapters 8, 77 & 92 hosted the 12th Annual IREM Gala benefitting Special Love for Children with Cancer on Friday, May 19th at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD. Special Love is a unique local charity that provides camp adventures and weekend getaways for children battling cancer.  Since its inception, IREM has donated over $500,000 to Special Love. This was another incredible evening, where we made a record-breaking donation of $80,000 to Special Love!  Check out some of the fun TapSnap Photo Booth Pics taken at the event.  You can see all the photo booth pics on the IREM Gala Facebook Page:

Community Action Efforts

 march event:

Our March event was the Humane Rescue Alliance of Washington DC. Each year, this charity embarks on an annual fundraising mission to support the organization and to bring awareness to their cause. The fundraising campaign culminates in their exclusive fashion runway show, Fashion For Paws. Through this, they raise nearly half a million dollars each year which directly benefits and aids the Humane Shelter and the selfless volunteers who donate their time. Thank you to everyone who participated in the 50/50 Raffle at our March meeting in support of this group.

Our Charity for April was the MANNA FOOD CENTER.  Thank you to everyone who brought a donation to our April Meeting in support of this cause.

Have an idea for a community service project or want to serve on this committee?

private offerings:

Spread the word that Private Offering Courses are available for your company - groups of 10 or more.  This means an instructor comes to your site and holds a class for just your company's employees.  The idea is to get a group of people to "fast track" their way to a CPM, ARM, or ACoM designation.  The more people in the class, the lower the price per person.  For more information on this excellent opportunity, contact the Region 3 Education Office or download the Private Offerings Brochure Here!

For those interested in taking courses at their own pace, IREM offers many online self-paced courses.  Open new doors for yourself with the help of IREM education.  With our online and classroom courses you'll give yourself a leg up in the constantly evolving world of real estate management.
